SLAVE REGISTER OPEN TO ALL

The descendants of South American slaves in the Netherlands are being given new insight into the lives of their ancestors. Slave registers in the former Dutch colony of Suriname are published online, and it is shedding light on a dark chapter in Dutch history.

The amount of 43 books with a total of almost 30.000 pages is now accessible to anyone. The pages give a copious amount of information that could raise emotions. Ranging from name and age too mentions of diseases and information about the sale. Anyone who is interested in their ancestors is now able to get them. This operation took 4 months, 1500 volunteers and crowdfunding to realise. Initiated by the Radboud university of Nijmegen and the Anton de Kom University of Suriname.
