I’m Not Racist!

“With all due respect I don’t have pity for you black niggas, that’s the way I feel. Screamin’ ‘Black Lives Matter’ ” is the first line that Joyner Lucas raps in his hit “I’m Not Racist”. As I got angry, quite offensive and at the same time goosebumps over my entire body, I continued listening. Joyner started citating the one fact after the other and I noticed that he was not even in the video. Different victims were lip syncing his lyrics. By setting two totally opposites across each other the video became powerful. On the one side of the table there was a white man sitting with a red trump hat citating the famous slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ and on the other end there was a stereotype black man sitting.

“I see a black man aimin’ his gun, but I’d rather see a black man claimin’ his son”

As two stereotypes express their frustration and confusion, Joyner is making you think about contemporary social problems. He is showing us that there is no resolution. Every story has two sides and unfortunately we are all victims of our own stubbornness.

“With all disrespect, I don’t really like you white motherfuckers, that’s just where I’m at. Screaming ”All Lives Matter” is a protest to my protest what kind of shit is that?”

It’s within our human nature to blame others for our own insecurities and pain, but let’s be honest no one is perfect. We all carry things inside no one else can see. Somewhere we all make sense, if the other side is willing to understand. The dope thing about Joyner is that every sentence he makes is so deep it’s incredible. One of my favorite is ‘You worry bout your life, so you take mine’. This shows that we all are scared and start to project that on others and mostly on the opposites. Let’s be a bit open minded and not be prejudiced until we have stood in each others shoes!

We were all humans until …

Race disconnected us,

Religion separated us,

Politics divided us,

And wealth classified us.
